Minor 8-hour setback on Hexi quilt top today

This morning I was excited to be finishing up adding the purple and pink flower rows to the rest of the quilt top. I think I had about 4 more to sew on. Finished that, then spread the top onto the floor and to my immediate disgust realized it was backwards: pink where the purple should be and visa versa. I spent a while thinking about the mistake and how mad I was at not checking to make sure it was correct in the first place. While thinking I matched up the reds I needed for the next row. Here they are-I am going to have to cut more reds too, so this is not all of them.

After matching the reds for awhile I picked up my seam ripper and went to work on fixing my problem. Then sewed it back correctly. I am glad I did! It looks like it is suppose to now....

Update on Hexagon Hand Piecing

I have been stitching away at the Grandmother's Flower Garden Hexy quilt top this week. I took this picture a couple of days ago showing the pink and purple flowers that are stacked up and ready for adding to the rest. I sewed them together first and will be adding both rows to the top in the next few days.

Quiltsy Christmas Quilt Block Swap Quilt Top

This past fall my Etsy Team Quiltsy held a Christmas quilt block swap. There were red and green and blue and silver groups. I did the red and green blocks. On my trip to my in-laws over Christmas I rummaged through my MIL's fabric stash and found this nice Christmas print that I used to set the top up with.

This top is going into my quilting pile now....there are 12 tops in front of it now to quilt. Wish me luck!

Hand Piecing

Many years ago (about 15) I started this hexagon quilt top. I admit that it has sat and left unfinished for long periods of time over the years. It seems I have had other things get in the way of me finishing it. During our recent travels I took it with me to work on. Now I want to stick with it and get it done. My pictures are not really great -my camera needs a major adjusting.

Anyway I have a stack of purple and pink flowers sitting here to finish those rows then on to reds.

All the fabric in this top is vintage, some feedsack, and some definitely out of date!

When I woke up this morning snow had arrived here in East Central Indiana. I am not a fan of the snow, but will enjoy having the sun warm things up here this week -and the snow will be gone until the next time.

Happy New Year from Ashlawnfarms! As the holidays are coming to a close it is time to start new goals for the new year. One of my goals is to destash many of the fabrics taking up room in my fabric closet. Today I listed on Etsy many listings of minky squares that I am parting with from my old cutting services. There are many listings to choose from.

For Christmas I gave my niece and nephew homespun traditional quilts.

The last few weeks have been busy rushing around getting Christmas things done. I had one sewing project to do for mom.....she loved her new quilted sweatshirt jacket I made her. My brother was most interested in the fact that I used a new sweatshirt to make it....he works on cars, so the "taking apart of things" perked his interest.

The homespun string quilt block making stopped at 24 for now. The blocks are sewn together and will become a lap quilt soon. I sandwiched the 3 layers together last night and will have that to quilt up soon.

Christmas Tree 2011

We decided to put up our small tree this year instead of lugging the big one up from the basement. I placed it on our dining room table to give it some height, but I have tons of decorations and not enough tree....oh well. The decoupage ornament balls I finished up a few weeks ago look great on the old tree. I also hung a couple of my rag swag garlands over the front branches and it really completed the tree. I have an issue with the tree topper though.....I don't like it. It does not match the rest of the prim decor. My normal tree topper is an angel but it is stained glass and does not work either. I am going to have to think on this one for a bit.....

DH started the painting behind the tree. I talked him into doing a prim barn star on it and he is working on the pip berries....not sure what is going on the left side, but he will come up with something I hope. It is an old textured abstract painting that he is re-purposing. Gotta love being married to an artist.

Homespun String Quilt Blocks

I have decided to add a "Sewing Bucket List" on my blog. This past year I have acknowledged my addiction to sewing/quilting and have so many things I want to create before I ....ya know -kick the bucket. So as my grandparents would say "If the Lord is willing...." I will start work on my bucket list pronto.

The first item listed is to make a string quilt. I have in mind to make it all from homespun scraps. I am sure I have mentioned a million times my favorite fabric is homespun as I just love the primitive look that it has. I have quite a large stash of homespun and a few bins full of scraps. So one of my goals with this bucket list item is to lessen my scrap pile.

Tonight I was able to complete the first 4 quilt blocks. I am using 10" muslin fabric for the backing of the strings.

One of My First Rag Quilts

A few years ago, when I started Rag Quilting, I gave my mother a special rag quilt for Christmas. She just loves vintage buttons and has a pretty impressive collection of them. She also loves the old feedsack fabrics and had given me a set of reproduction fabric charms she had in her stash.

So it was pretty easy to create something for her using her favorites. I get a kick out of seeing her first reaction to it once she unwrapped it.....reminds me of the excited expressions grandma gave many Christmas's ago.

Anyway, as I plan my Christmas gifts for this year, I hope to get expressions of equal proportion or better when she unwraps her _______________. All I am saying is it is NOT another Rag Quilt! :)

I finished making grandma's leg warmers last night. One more gift done!

I may add some sort of embellishment at the top of them, but for now this is what I have done.

Today I have been playing in decoupage and homespun fabric scraps re -purposing some vintage glass Christmas Ball ornaments. I had spray-painted them last year and the did not turn out the way I had hoped so on goes the fabrics. So far they are turning out ok. I look forward to seeing them on the tree when they are done.

Boring Black Friday

I cannot believe I am saying this, but I am bored. I guess that is what I get for staying home on Black Friday huh? Oh well. I did make my Christmas list for what I want to buy online, but hubby has to approve it first. I just want to be done already.

In the process of making my list I have decided to crochet my grandmother a pair of leg warmers, so I have started those. I may even make myself a pair! They are so warm and cozy already with what I have done.

Great day at my brother's new place. God blessed us with such a beautiful day that included sunshine and warmer weather. We ate, chatted, and took a tour of the new barn being built. It was good seeing my brother and his family. I pray they are doing well.

Mom and I visited some before I headed back home. Planning for Christmas festivities seems to be coming together...though I need to check into what my fathers side is doing.

I am thinking of doing all of my Christmas shopping online this year. I hate crowds for sure, and am not going out on Black Friday tomorrow. I hate getting up early and have to work a few hours anyway, so it works for me to shop online at my leisure and not deal with long lines and aching feet.

This weekend I will be working on a small little girl's purse that a lady from my church ordered. I am hoping to have it for her this Sunday.

As 2011 is coming to an end with one month to go I would like to send out a special "Thank You" to all of my readers who have reached my blog to read about rag quilting in one way or another. This year started out badly for me and I missed blogging for several months due to not feeling up to it. Staying current with the latest trends is a tough thing to keep up with, so in those summer months I had much to catch up on. I have asked blog readers to give me feedback from time to time and have not had many respond to me, so I guess I am at least giving them information that is valuable to them, or they are not interested in my blabbering and move on. lol. My plans for 2012?

Well 2012, if God is Willing to allow me on this journey of quilt making and pattern writing, I plan to transition more into the traditional quilting where my roots are. Rag quilting is so easy and so non-challenging for me at this point that I need to venture into new territory. I am just bored with Rag Quilting. There I said it....with that being said I have been toying with the idea of launching a new business name featuring my grandmother who taught me the art of sewing and quilting in the first place. We will see- I will pray about it and see if that is where the Lord wants me to be next.

I know there may be several issues involved either way. I am just curious. When it comes down to it what do you prefer?

We all look for Free items, I do too, but when it has to be purchased what is your preference?

Seriously, I am sitting idle at 9 pounds lost on day 14 of The 17 Day Diet. The diet is still going great- I am just disappointed because the needle on my scales seems stuck! Oh well! My pants are more roomy so why complain? Right?

Busy Days of Summer

August is here at last. It is not my favorite month because my work as an Athletic Trainer is at an all-time busy season. So I survived today and have 2 weeks of practices before school starts in 2 weeks. Yes TWO weeks.

The weekend was a big last hurrah for me to get some ends tied up. I was able to list my newest Etsy listings on eBay and edited some of the existing listings. I hate it when I use free templates that others have offered but don't keep their graphics current. My listings were pretty sad looking at them with the Tinyurl logo in the background. No more templates like that for me!

On my table lies 6 more stacks of fabric to make into 3 more rag purses 1 table runner and 2 baby quilts for my church charity. I have sewn 4 purses, 2 table runners, and 2 pincushions in the last 3 days. I have spent most of my free time sewing and will continue while I am feeling productive. They lie in wait for the clipping part.

My husband and I finished edited my newest rag purse tutorial: listed both on Etsy and eBay and ready for this season's sewing projects!

This was day 9 of my venture dieting on The 17 Day Diet. I have lost 9 pounds and am really proud of myself because I have not cheated one time. I am staying the course and my mind is in a good place. I can feel the fat melt off my legs and thighs. My yoga practice is helping too. It is just so good to feel mentally, physically, and spiritually stable for once in my life!

The New Rag Purse Style / Five pounds down

I was able to complete a new purse in a new style of rag quilting this past weekend. I am in the editing phases of having the tutorial for this one ready. I hope to have it (the tutorial) complete this weekend and ready for sale.

Today I am starting day 5 on The 17 Day Diet. I have lost 5 pounds! Yay me! I am finding this diet easier than I imagined to do. I was concerned with being hungry during the first few days, and to my surprise had very little hunger issues. I did not even eat my snacks I had allotted to me. I have 10 more pounds to go to meet my goal. Five more pounds come off after that to meet my mid BMI range.

For exercise I have been doing some Yoga and weight training. I will be doing some running and weight training this afternoon with a co-worker. I hope I can keep up!

New Tutorial for Baby Rag Quilt Burp Cloth set/ 17 Day Diet beginnings

I have had a Rag Quilt Tutorial Instructions for sale now for almost 4 years. It was created with mindset of using chenille fabrics on the backside and it is a larger lap size quilt. I see so many baby rag quilts for sale and am seeing burp cloths as well, so I wanted to make a tutorial that brought both of these crafted items together. Making burp cloths can be a great way to use up the extra fabrics from a baby quilt project and add something special or additional to your work. Over 2 1/2 years ago I lost 40 pounds on the Atkin's diet. I have been off and on the maintenance program now for over a year and have gained 15 back. Recently I spoke a co-worker that had lost over 50 pounds since January and inquired what she was using for her diet. She stated she was doing "The 17 Day Diet" and explained a little bit about it during our lunch period. Her explanation interested me greatly and I ordered the book that night. Two days later the book was lying on my kitchen table and I had the first 3 chapters read that night. I wrote out the grocery list-spoke to my hubby about it and he agreed we would do it.

Yesterday he spent 2 hours at the grocery-God love him! But he is 100% committed to this venture as I am, so he is helping me with meal planning and cooking. He even stopped by the pharmacy to pick up my Vitamin D 1000 iu that I am ordered to take now.

This morning I weighed in like I do every morning.....finally down 2 pounds. That needle on the scale has not moved in a very long time!

The more I talk about this diet, the more stories I keep hearing from here and there. People are losing weight. It is working. It is rapid. So as long as my mind is not on chocolate I am good. Chocolate is my favorite! Here is my trick though: I have to try this and do it honestly for 17 days. I want to see what happens. The next 17 days the diets changes again and that phase allows for more weight loss. I am eager to see what happens and test it out for myself. My co-worker said that once she is on the maintenance phase she eats off the diet on weekends, but Monday-Friday is back on it. That sounds doable for me. I was successful on the Atkins, but am looking forward to some changes.

New Bible Cover Rag Quilt Project/Vitamin D

The Bible/Book Cover was written so that it can be custom made to your Bible or Book. All it takes is some measuring and simple math skills to make it work.

So I had a well check a few weeks ago with my new doctor. She ordered up several blood tests which I had done last week. The nurse called me to inform me I am very low on Vitamin D. Really? I guess I am not spending enough time outside working in the yard/garden, so I am perplexed. My garden looks better this year than any other year! So I am to take 1000 iu's of Vitamin D now. I hope this helps my depression since it seems to be at an all time low the last 6 months.....

What I have been up to lately

Good afternoon friends!

It has been 7 months since I last posted on New Years day. January 2nd I became very sick with a stomach ulcer and was recovering from that for 8 weeks. I had a bad case of winter depression too, and that elongated my recovery even further. The last few months have been kinder to me and I realize it is time to get this blog back up and going again.

Some updates I need to include in this posting is that I decided to discontinue cutting fabric squares to sell on eBay and Etsy. Lets face it -it was good money, but with me being the only one running it all (and working full time) it was wearing me out completely. I enjoy creating my own things, so I am backing away from killing myself.

I have made another adjustment too: I am offering more items on Etsy than eBay now. eBay brings in more sales, but Etsy brings in more buyers with handmade in mind. Not to mention the better deal on fees.

Lastly, I have written new rag quilting tutorials! Be sure to watch for those to be listed on Etsy and eBay soon. My husband reported to me that he is ready to .jpg 4 of 5 of them this afternoon once they pass my final approval to do so. I think you will find some new things to make aside from the norm.

This year, I have a co-worker whose brother is in the need for a special wheelchair. Our department is joining together to assist him in getting it among other things. What a wonderful opportunity to give during this time of year.

Shhhhh! This is actually for my MIL!

This fall I have been skimming through several quilt magazines looking for ideas for gift giving. My MIL's kitchen is decked out in the blue/white dishes and decor, so when I came across this picture in the magazine my thoughts instantly went to her!

Knowing this was what I was going to make for her, I have been collecting remnants in blues/whites lately. Just enough to complete this as a wall hanging.

Last night I cut all the squares and today did all the sewing.

I used 4.5" squares for this.

Once I had the four corner blocks sewn I decided to change the overall pattern from the magazine a bit. I added in the white cross in the middle as an afterthought. I am not good at doing appliqued pieces, so this was a way out of it!

I follow a blog on free-motion quilting, The Free Motion Quilting Project, and was very tempted to use a cross pattern she had blogged about. So I did.....

Lets just say the 35" x 35" wall hanging was a success. I finished the free-motion quilting tonight. Yay! Another finish all the way through! Except for the binding, which I will do later this week.

This was hard on my back and shoulders moving the quilt around, so I think the next free motion pattern I use will be a bigger pattern!

Thread is out too, so I must replenish before I can sew again! :(

Anyhoo this was fun and different from my usual rag quilting projects.

Question: How Big is a Strip Rag Quilt?

You ask?

I have strip rag quilt kits listed on Etsy and eBay.

Typically I will cut the strips of the fabric from selvage to selvage. The width of a bolt is anywhere from 42" to 45". But because all bolts of fabric never come out equal a strip rag quilt can be cut down to about 38"-40" wide to even up these different bolt widths.

Perseverance has always been one of those actions that I cling to. Finishing the project-start to finish. Sticking to it. Not letting anything get in the way of finishing something.

I lived by this word a lot in college. It got me through some tough times. It made me stronger as a woman. It came to me in the book of James as I was working on a project for a Bible class I was taking. Little did I know that his verse would still keep me in line and order today.

⁴ Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Over the last year or so I have suffered from depression and have been on what I would say the "wrong" uppers. What I mean is my physician has changed my meds. and I am now back in my old skin again. The brain is a strange organ. Something as small as a wrong chemical reaction taking place there can literally change you into someone you don't know. I was that person. And looking back now I cannot even believe it was me. But I had to go through that to get to where I am now. Persevering through. Someone once told me I like to get on my pink bulldozer every once in awhile. Well I am on it by-golly!

Recently I took on a job- a custom sewing job to make 6 saddle blankets for a gal...this might be the first batch of a series of them if they are a big hit for her out in California on her horse ranch. But anyway this job was big! I am actually so proud of myself for starting, staying with, and finishing the job all within a 2 week time period. (I work full time too.) It is such a blessing to be able to create and this gal has given me some really great ideas to create from scratch. They are all finished now and I wanted to share some pictures with you all. The first one I think was in a prior post. But here are the final 5:

I hope she sends me pictures of them on the horses....I would love to see them for what they are made for.

No more football, some snow, and Creation # 38

Tonight was the first Friday night I have gotten to stay at home and not be out at a high school football game since the second week of August. I am so thankful to not be out in this weather! It snowed today which makes me shiver just thinking about being out in it for football. Season is over Thank God!

So what I did tonight after work was to try to sew a rag quilt purse. I did not get too far. My machine needed a good overhaul, so 3 hours of cleaning it did the trick.

I finished this rag quilted tote last night. I was able to wash and dry it today, but did not get a chance to list it, so I will add links to this blogging later.

Ironically there are snowflakes on the fabric in this tote. I used minky dot fabric as well. I was hoping to sell this as a kit and had it listed for a long time, but no dice. I hope it will sell now.

I am working on the next tote now and will be showing it off soon.

Have a great weekend. I am looking forward to my extra hour this weekend! Daylight Savings. I dread the Springtime change though.....but that is a long time away.

Busy Weekend-Creations #20-24

This weekend has been a busy one. I did quite a bit in a short period of time, but wish I had more time to sew before the weekend is over.

Friday night we had a football game. We lost, but played better than we had been so that was good. We are 1-3 right now going into the 5th week of school....wow 5 already? I am the certified athletic trainer at the school.

Saturday I went to get my hair cut. It needed it bad. I feel much better now that it is freshly cut. Will be getting another spiral perm in October. I liked the one I got last fall so much I am doing it again. Much easier to style for me.

Saturday afternoon I finished clipping a rag quilt, diaper bag, pillow, and 2 burp cloths. Got them washed and dried, but need to work on some finishing touches before I list them online to sell.

Then last night I worked some on my Americana swag I have sitting by the computer. It is about 2/3 done now.

This morning I went to church alone. DH was suffering from allergies again and did not feel up to going. I wish he had because the sermon was so great. I know it would have helped him, but I guess God wanted just me to hear it by myself.

After church I drove home, dodging all of the construction going on in this town. I will be so happy once the roads are finished. (We have 3 major jobs going on right now.) It is just hard to avoid those spots when traveling anywhere I need to go these days-especially to work.

Driving up the driveway I noticed tomatoes needing picking again in the garden. So I grabbed the harvesting basket and headed out there in my church attire. Picked 3 basketfulls of matos. Add salsa to my "To Do" list this week!! Does anyone have any good salsa recipes???

All afternoon I have been cutting fabric orders and will have to run to the supplier tomorrow to finish a few. Here is a stack of my work.

What to make with Fabric Scraps? Creation #16 &17

Being a fabric cutter, I accumulate so much scraps that it is getting to be a nuisance in my storage area. Most of the scraps have ultimately hit the garbage can, but here lately I have been collecting them for more craft ideas.

I love homespun fabrics the best, so here is a swag I constructed out of homespun scrap materials.

I just used a 6 foot long piece of jute twine, knotted the ends and left about 8 inches bare on each end. Next I just started single knotting each 6"x1" strip of homespun scrap onto it. Colors used compliment each other. Here are 2 examples:

DH decided I needed to start cutting fabric and batting squares again, so I spent most of the day getting listings back up on eBay and Etsy. Summer break will be here in one week! And I will have time to cut, cut, cut!!

This evening I mowed the lawn, weeded the garden some and barely made it to safety getting in the garage at dusk because there were some skunks headed at me. I freaked out to say the least! It looked like a mama and 2-3 babies. Joy! I wish the neighbor took better care of her property because they were coming from her place.

Yesterday I was all set to work at my regular job covering a couple of baseball games, and was halted by a downpour of rain at game time. With games rained out, I arrived home with time to sew before bedtime.

I had an unfinished object sitting at my sewing machine, so I finished it up....here she is: a lavender/purple fabric bowl that I will be listing on eBay and Etsy soon.

Once the fabric bowl was finished, I opened the fabric closet to see what I could work on next..... I will leave you wondering with anticipation because it involves Moda fabrics!!

Cardinal Calls and a few new Etsy listings up

We had a great time today at church. It was the day our congregation honors the high school and college seniors who are graduating this year. It seems this school year had flown by as they always do, but it was really nice to see these youngsters all grown up. We have been at this church now for 4 years, so we have gotten to see these high school kids all the way through now. What a reflection on these past 4 years! God is great!

Later in the day I listed a few items on Etsy. I am trying to simplify my life one day at a time, so this is all I was able to accomplish today on the crafting hobby I love so much! Here is one of the pincushion kits listed today.

Then this evening I decided to go out and play in the dirt. We have had a tremendous amount of rain in the last 3 weeks and the weeds have just gone mad! It has been too wet to even try and hoe them, but today I spent 3 hours getting about 1/2 done. I have some more planting to go too, so I need to clear the rest of the weeds out this week!

While I was finishing up I hear the neighborhood male cardinal tweeting away to his love: three long tweets. I hear this pair all the time as this is the 3rd summer in a row we have noticed them around. So the male is calling out and the neighbor behind me has a little boy around 2 or 3 maybe. This little boy starts mimicking the bird....he did not whistle but made the same sound as the cardinal with his voice. It was just so cute!! Made me smile at nature. God is so great!

Happy St Patty's Day!

Today it was so sunny and warm out. I realized some tulips and daffodils were coming up. I had dug into the hard, dry ground last fall to plant those bulbs and got discouraged at how tough it was to dig a 6" hole with the ground so hard. So I ended up putting the bulbs in the shed and forgot about them. After seeing the shoots coming up today I checked the batch in the shed and most of them were ok and starting to sprout....so what the heck! I started digging holes and setting them in.....so now I wait and hope to see if they survived! I will post pics later if they do! Fingers crossed everyone!

Well what can I say about DST? Lost an hour of the weekend. Living in Indiana all my life has been a treat up until a couple of years ago when we officially changed for good. Kits, Kits, Kits

I have been busy making my Rag Quilt Purse and Pincushion Complete Kits available on Etsy, ArtFire, and Bonanzle as well as eBay.

Some new adjustments to the kits have been made such as including Warm and Natural/White quilt batting instead of flannel fabric. Also I am including plastic canvas and materials to make the base of the purse for sturdiness. You might find some kits using minky fabrics also....that is new and the prices are more for those. Traditional, 4-patch, and 9-patch kits are all available. I can custom design a kit for you with your specs so give me a message if you need something specific! Blessings!

Over Christmas break I was thrilled to do some sewing and creating. I made several rag quilted items and have listed the first few of them on Etsy now.

The first one is a Homespun Candle Mat. For those of you who do not know me, Homespuns are my absolute favorite fabrics.....whenever I make a homespun raggie it is hard for me to give it up! This candle mat would be a nice addition to your folk primitive decor.

Secondly is a cute little Shamrock St. Patricks Day Candle Mat. It is still good and early to be shopping for March 17th! This holiday decoration is a sweet little accent piece and can be used as a centerpiece for any table in your home.

The last creation is a set of 2 candle mats! These sunflower creations are bright and happy. One has a red accent while the other is blue. I could not decide whether to separate them or not....so for now I will list them as a set. They do go great together!

What is Minky Dot Fabric?

Recently I had someone ask me what Minky Dot Fabric is.

I started selling this item not too long ago as I am seeing more and more people using it it rag quilts, bibs, burp cloths, diaper bags, etc. I made a bath robe for my mother for Christmas as well. The squares I cut and sell have been going pretty well. And as more and more customers come along, some have no idea what Minky Fabrics are.

So I did some reading on it and discovered some things as well that I would like to share. I Google just about everything these days, so that is where most of this information is coming from. That and my own experiences!

I did discover that Benartex has the top of the line product called Minkee Blankee. People who use Benartex Minkee claim it is the softest and the best there is. The price of this product is also at the top of the line and can sometimes cost up to $20.00 per yard.

I do not know of any other Brand names claiming rights to this fabric, but there are some companies such as Joann's and Hobby Lobby that sell a similar product at a much lower cost when on sale.

Minky Fabrics are 100% polyester.
They have embossed dots, hearts, stars, etc. on them or they can be striped or plain just to name a few.
These fabrics are very comparable to a velour fabric and to touch it feels like petting a rabbit or mink. That is where it got its name I guess. The nap is longer like hair.
They also come in a ton of colors and more colors are starting to be made from what I am seeing.

Minky fabrics are very messy to work with though. Every time I cut a batch I go through several sheets of my lint roller. I usually lint roll all the squares before I ship too so they look better.

The squares I cut do not stack well. Since they are slick on the backside they tend to slide around some on each other. Minky is also a bit of a trick to sew since it slides. Be sure to use some scraps of it to practice with before you start sewing your project to get the settings on your machine in sinky with Minky!

One thing I read was not to use a hot iron on Minky. Especially on the embossed shapes such as the dots. In making mom's bath robe, I was ironing seams as specified in the pattern directions and learned the hard way not to iron it. Sigh!

Another thing I just read was not to microwave this product. You ask why? -Me too!! But in health care, some workers will do that to heat a blanket for patients. Minky will melt. So please "don't miky the minky!" lol

2010 Changes

Hello!
The New Year 2010 has brought some changes for my eBay Store. My husband and I have discussed closing my eBay store a few days out of the week. So we have announced being open Thursday - Sunday and closing Monday - Wednesday. Shipping will take place most Mondays and Tuesdays. I appreciate my buyers, but sometimes I just need a break! We will see how this goes for awhile. I enjoy sewing so much that I need to close down to be able to.

Tip #4 From Rag Quilting Series

Rag Quilts make your sewing machine dirty. That is an understatement. Dirty makes it not work efficiently. Just like everything we have to clean it too. Always remember to clean your sewing machine when you finish a project. You will be glad you did!

When you have cleaned and oiled your machine according to you user's manual enjoy some chocolate and kick back-you deserve it!

Tip #3 From Rag Quilting Tip Series

LOL When I first began Rag Quilting I was doing everything the hard way. Mom had gotten me a quilt block kit for Christmas shortly after I picked up sewing again. With the raggies, I was sewing then clipping each sandwich as it passed through the machine.

I started reading the instructions in the kit Mom got me, and was clued in on what chain-stitching is. My Rag Quilting is much faster now.

Here are the details of chain stitching for Rag Quilting:

1. Make your fabric "sandwiches" and stack them by your machine.

2. Grab one sandwich and feed it through the machine diagonally corner to opposite corner. (Don't clip the thread when it is all the way through.)

3. Grab another sandwich and feed it through. Keep doing this until the stack is gone.

4. Clip the threads now between each of the sandwiches you just sewed through.

5. Stack them up again

6. Chain stitch the other line of the "X" on your sandwiches.

7. Clip apart again.

Rag Quilt Dog Beds I Made

Good Morning! 3 days until Christmas and I have some sewing yet to do! But I wanted to share some rag quilted dog beds I finished recently for a custom order. These dog beds were easy to make, just required many hours to complete. Since I made these in spurts over my busy Fall Season I would guess that I spent 25-30 hours completing them. Not my ideal project time, but my regular work kept me from sewing the past fall. Let me explain: I had started them in June and finished them around Thanksgiving. Fall sports at work and my cutting services at home kept me hopping!

So break time! I am pushing forward with sewing and pattern projects I have had packed away in my sewing closet and mind for months.

Back to the dog beds:
These 2 were custom made for 2 very large dogs. Labs, I believe. They are 48" x 35" x 5" in size.

Plans are to write a pattern for these including a size chart for different size beds...keep yer eyes peeled!

Hey everyone! The middle of October is here and I cannot believe it!

Back in April I decided to start a cutting service for fabrics used mostly for rag quilting. Well it has turned into a full time job besides my actual full time job as an athletic trainer. My sewing time is maybe a couple hours a month now due to the time involved filling orders.

At this time I am offering solid color flannel fabric squares cut in many different sizes, pre-fringed squares, Warm and White and Warm and Natural batting squares, all of my rag quilt patterns, and some of my handmade items.

Red at the 4-H show

My nephew, Mason, showed his pig, Red, at the 4-H show Monday. I was tickled to get to go watch! Being at the fairgrounds brought back some fond memories of showing my cows way back!

Here are some shots of Mason prepping, getting some last minute show tips, and showing Red.

Red wanted to run in the ring, so Mason had to work to keep him in line!

Summer June happenings

Wow....where has this month of June gone? It is half over already and I feel I have not gotten a real chance to enjoy it at all!

Well life is busy at Ashlawnfarms. I finished a set of closet curtains this past weekend for the stepdaughter, so I will have some time to do some sewing for myself in the next few weeks. I have so many UFO's it is not funny! But maybe that will give me something to blog about?

Ashlawnfarms is also having a June sale on eBay.....so if you are interested in rag quilting supplies or patterns check it out.

Father's Day is this Sunday too!! So don't forget about that!

Squirrel City

I have been wanting to blog about this for a few days now. I just seem to have minimal time to do it!!

We gathered hickory nuts at my dads last fall and still have them sitting in bowls by the fireplace.

Every day we have thrown some out to the squirrels. Well one in particular that is. She is becoming very comfortable at just waltzing up the sidewalk and letting us know she is here to visit. She even gets on the chair outside and looks in the window. She takes her nuts and we watch her head off across the street to bury them in the neighbors flowerbed.

She has even brought a couple of friends too.

Here she is earlier this spring with her head in a pumpkin.

Well today there are 5 squirrels hanging out in the two trees out front.

Hubby and I are getting a kick out of them.

Day to Build?

This morning I am blogging about a set of Carninals I have at my house. Each morning I get up and drink a cup of coffee and catch up on some reading online. It is usually still dark and quiet outside.

This morning, Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal are tweeting away like crazy outside my window. I am wondering if today is building day for a new set of fledglings? Building day for a nest, which would be the second one I know of outside my window.

Last spring they built a nest right outside the window in a bush and raised their 3 babies. It was great watching them create their family.

Are they going to build or are they just "chatting" about it. I have no idea...so we will see what happens.

While mom and I were out shopping yesterday we stopped at Warm Glo Candles off I70 in Centerville, IN which is a huge antique shop area.

Anyway I saw this little nick nack that said:

"The word DIET puts a bad taste in my mouth, I have to wash it out with CHOCOLATE!!"

It has been 1 month now or 4 weeks since I put my dog, Brit, to sleep. It has been really hard adjusting to not having her around. Not tripping over her, not feeding her, not taking her out at 6am, not having her sit next to me at the chair, or following me around everywhere I go in the house. Nope, my little shadow, my best and faithful friend sits in a box now on top of the hutch in the living room. Her ashes are with me now.

The message on her box reads:
